Stewart Wins 20th Annual 360 Knoxville Nationals!
by Stacy Ervin, Knoxville Raceway
KNOXVILLE, Iowa -- Shane Stewart only led one lap to win on his qualifying night. But he proved he was hungry for a more dramatic victory.
The Oklahoma driver won the 20th Annual Arnold Motor Supply 360 Knoxville Nationals presented by Windstream. The win came in the Lucas Oil ASCS-sanctioned event at the Knoxville Raceway on Saturday, August 7, and was worth $10,000.
When the 25-lap race went green, pole-sitter Chad Humston, a Knoxville 360 division regular, took off with the lead and ran a steady line of the high groove from turn one to turn three and taking the low groove from turn three to turn one. He let others battle it out behind him.
On the seventh lap, Brian Brown’s car went up in a ball of smoke and flame as he was running in third down the backstretch. As he sputtered around the track, third starter Stewart pulled alongside Humston to challenge for the lead. Brown finally came to a stop in turn four and Humston narrowly missed hitting him in the back before the yellow was thrown.
On the pace laps following the caution, it became apparent Humston had lost a brake caliper and had a brake line hanging down from the car. When signaled by officials, Humston indicated he knew he had no brakes.
The race went green with Humston still holding the lead, but coming out of turn four, Humston’s front end broke; he skimmed the fence and then shot down the race track. Johnny Herrera had nowhere to go as Humston’s car came down the track and Herrera went for a big flip in front of the grandstands, nearly going over the fence into victory lane.
It was at this caution that Brooke Tatnell was summoned by his crew to the work area for a look at his rear-end gears. He did not restart.
Stewart inherited the lead at lap 10 and survived a few more cautions and some stout challenges. The caution returned on lap 13 when Davey Heskin stopped with mechanical problems. Another caution came a lap later when Brady Bacon hit the fence in turns one and two.
There was a stretch of green-flag laps after that as Stewart put his foot to the floor to stay ahead of a surging Sammy Swindell and Jason Johnson. The final caution of the race came just as the white flag was being displayed when Randy Hannagan slowed with a broken rear end while running fifth. A green, white, checkered restart saw Stewart stay ahead of Swindell and Johnson. Knoxville regular Dustin Selvage, who started outside the front row, held on for a fourth-place finish.
Tim Kaeding made the pass for the lead on the fourth lap of the B-Main and set a new 15-lap track record with the win. Danny Heskin led all 12 laps of the C-Main to win that event. Ricky Logan survived a multi-car melee on the start of the D-Main to win that 10-lap event. Dave Hall led all eight laps to win the E-Main.

Chad Humston Racing - Back in Black! (July 29, 2010) – Consistency will stay the theme for the Mark Burch Motorsports,Chad Humston Racing team. If you take a good look at the past couple of weeks, you won’t see anything less than the definition of consistent. It’s been all about the experience for Chad and the crew, and lucky for them they can’t get enough! It was back to their home track of Boone County Raceway in Albion, Nebraska for their Friday night show. “With the threat of weather in the forecast, it proved to be just the right choice.” Owner Mark Burch had to say. After last weekend’s events the team worked this week to get the car fresh and ready; they unloaded the Engler Machine and Tool #1M with a re-freshened engine and the plan was to get it broke in with a few laps before taking it to Knoxville. What a plan that was! Not only did they put a few laps on it, but they also claimed a feature win on their first night out with it.
Saturday night took the team back to Knoxville Raceway for another challenging night. With different faces making their way to town in preparation for the upcoming 360 Nationals and many of the 410 drivers pulling double duty in both the 410 and 360 classes, it would be trials. Chad started the night qualifying seventh fastest and brought the #1M home with a deserving second place finish in his heat, after a good battle to get there. “The nice part about qualifying seventh is that we would sit on the front row of the A-Main.” Owner Mark Burch said. The Engler Machine and Tool #1M started first row outside for the feature. After a tough start, which put Brian Brown in the lead, you could bet that Chad was chasing him down. Chad was challenged by Garner but managed to wheel the #1M through traffic and within striking distance of Brian Brown. Chad finished the night with a justifiable second place. “We really wanted the win, but second is all we could muster against one of the hottest drivers in the Midwest. Congratulations to Brian Brown and crew. It was a great race” Said Chad. “We’re going to have to leave this yellow car home. It only knows how to run second here!” Owner Mark Burch exclaimed. So, as the team will have it, they are headed back to Knoxville Raceway this weekend and they will be “Back in Black”. Make sure you get out there to cheer them on as they make a few more laps around the famed half mile, in preparation of the much anticipated 360 Nationals.

Ready or Not Here He Comes!
NEWTON (July 14, 2010) – The Mark Burch Motosports, Chad Humston Racing crew changed it up a little this past weekend, making Knoxville their first stop and heading to Boone County Raceway in Albion, Nebraska, to end their weekend Sunday night. Saturday night at Knoxville Raceway, just added to the chase for the Mark Burch Motorsports, Chad Humston Racing team. Week after week they put on a great show, battling for their Cup Championship points with drivers like Dustin Selvage; last weekend was no different. Chad went out to start the night qualifying fourth quickest. His time placed him in the fifth starting position for his heat. Due to track conditions it was up to Chad to wrestle the Engler Machine and Tool #1M to a third place finish. Humston’s finish landed him the sixth place starting position in the main event. The team made minimal changes to the car, which led to an exciting race for everyone. Chad made his move, perfecting a slide job to take Jon Agan and then picking off Russ Hall for the second position. The race went from green to checkered with no stops in between and with lap cars making their appearance Humston would soon find out that Selvage had entered the battle. Clint Garner took the win from his front row starting position as second and third closed the gap during all the traffic. Chad took his #1M to Victory Lane with a third place finish for the evening. “It was a great race, but we felt we were capable of getting the win. We can’t wait to get back to Knoxville to try it again.” Owner Mark Burch said. It was off to Boone Country Speedway in Albion , Nebraska for the Sunday night show, where they experienced some tough luck but managed to make the best of it. Hot laps were great and confidence hit a high note for the entire team, but an unfortunate engine part failure dictated their heat race finish and scrambling to get it fixed was their new tune. With only two classes and Chad ’s qualifier race first on deck, the team showed their rallying call by changing the engine in fifteen minutes! The Engler Machine and Tool #1M started the night’s main event in the eleventh place position. Chad fought his was to second but it was Brian Brown who would take the win; even in second place it was a job well done for the Mark Burch Motorsports, Chad Humston Racing team. “We struggled a little with the setup, not having enough time to change much of anything, but we brought home another podium finish and the car in one piece. What a crazy night.” Chad Humston had to say. Get a front row seat and watch as the Engler Machine and Tool #1M, Mark Burch Motorsports, Chad Humston Racing team makes their way back to Knoxville Raceway, and Chad shows his competition what he’s capable of for this Saturday’s event.
